Transforming the East End's Food Landscape: Marci Moreau's Vision for a Healthier, More Accessible FutureMarci Moreau, the new executive director of East End Food, is on a mission to revolutionize the region's food system. With a deep personal connection to the power of healthy eating and a wealth of experience in the nonprofit sector, Moreau is poised to lead the organization into a new era as it transitions to a state-of-the-art facility in Riverhead.

Empowering Communities Through Locally Grown Produce and Nutritious Meals

Harnessing the Healing Power of Food

Moreau's journey to her current role at East End Food was deeply personal. After her daughter Rachel was diagnosed with leukemia at just 2 years old, and her late husband Michael's 11-year battle with breast cancer, Moreau realized the profound impact that nutrition can have on physical and emotional well-being. "I realized, because her treatments were so intense, that I needed to help her heal physically after all the chemo and radiation," Moreau recalled. This experience fueled her passion for promoting access to healthy, locally sourced foods, a mission she now brings to her work at East End Food.

Bridging the Gap Between Local Farms and Underserved Communities

As the new executive director, Moreau's top priority is to improve accessibility to healthy, locally grown produce and meals, particularly in underserved communities. "For people in underserved communities, sometimes that cannot be their priority. Often there's a stigma attached to local food: that it's not accessible, too expensive or out of reach," she acknowledged. To address this, East End Food's farm-to-school program and partnerships with local food pantries aim to introduce fresh, whole, clean local food to these institutions, helping to break down barriers and educate the community on the benefits of nutrient-rich, locally sourced ingredients.

Fostering a Thriving, Sustainable Food System

Moreau's vision for East End Food extends beyond just improving access to healthy foods. She is also focused on building a more resilient and sustainable food system in the region. "Our farms are esteemed, our small food producers are valued. Out here, people speak the language of food. They appreciate it more than just a source of sustenance. It's a core component of life," she observed. By helping farmers turn their surplus into minimally processed, value-added products, East End Food not only boosts revenue for local producers but also reduces food waste, a critical component of a truly sustainable food system.

Empowering Individuals Through Nutrition and Education

Moreau's expertise in nutrition and her passion for helping others extend beyond her work at East End Food. She previously ran a nonprofit that supports children with cancer and their families, and she founded a food brand focused on nutrient-dense recipes. As a certified nutritional therapist, Moreau specializes in conditions like depression, PTSD, Alzheimer's, and cancer, underscoring her deep understanding of the profound impact that food can have on overall health and well-being.

Transforming the East End Food Hub: A Beacon of Healthy, Sustainable Living

At the heart of Moreau's vision for East End Food is the organization's new million facility, the East End Food Hub, located in Riverhead. This 5,000-square-foot hub will feature an indoor farmers market, a shared commercial kitchen, and a range of nutrition and culinary workshops. "With that, I think we'll improve accessibility in the area for better, cleaner, local food," Moreau said. By providing a centralized hub for local food production, distribution, and education, the East End Food Hub aims to become a beacon of healthy, sustainable living for the entire community.

Celebrating the Flavors of the East End: Moreau's Culinary Inspirations

Moreau's passion for food extends beyond her professional work. When asked about her "last supper," she described a mouthwatering menu that perfectly encapsulates the flavors of the East End: "A grilled peach salad with all fresh farm greens. I grill the peaches with balsamic with tomatoes and burrata. And I'm Italian, so hot peppers, chicken cutlets and fried zucchini flowers." This personal touch underscores Moreau's deep appreciation for the region's bountiful produce and her commitment to celebrating the culinary traditions that make the East End so unique. As Marci Moreau embarks on her new role at East End Food, her vision for a healthier, more accessible, and sustainable food system is poised to transform the region's culinary landscape. With her wealth of experience, her passion for nutrition, and her unwavering dedication to empowering communities, Moreau is set to lead East End Food into a new era of growth and impact.
