The Buffalo Music Hall of Fame has announced its 2024 class of inductees, celebrating the remarkable contributions of ten talented musicians who have left an indelible mark on the city's vibrant music scene. From Grammy-nominated educators and composers to legendary jazz performers and beloved local bands, this year's honorees represent the diverse and rich musical heritage of Buffalo.
Honoring the Luminaries of Buffalo's Musical Landscape
Celebrating Exceptional Music Educators and Composers
The 2024 class of the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame includes two exceptional music educators and composers who have made significant contributions to the local and national music landscape. Phil Aguglia, a Grammy-nominated music teacher, has been recognized for his outstanding work as a sought-after conductor, clinician, and speaker, earning accolades from prestigious organizations such as People Magazine, the Walt Disney Corporation, and the Buffalo Bills. Anthony Casuccio, a Grammy-nominated author, composer, and educator, has produced projects for renowned artists, including Jim Croce, Johnny Cash, Tommy Dorsey, and Les Paul, showcasing his versatility and impact in the industry.
Honoring the Legends of Buffalo's Jazz Scene
The Buffalo Music Hall of Fame also celebrates the legacy of Hank D'Amico, a notable clarinetist who has left an indelible mark on the city's jazz scene. D'Amico has had the privilege of performing alongside legendary artists such as Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, cementing his status as a revered figure in the world of jazz.
Recognizing the Enduring Appeal of Family Bands
The 2024 inductees also include the Krew Brothers Band, a family polka band that gained national recognition after their "big break" on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour show in 1961. This family-centric group has captivated audiences with their infectious energy and dedication to preserving the rich tradition of polka music.
Celebrating Versatile and Acclaimed Musicians
The class of 2024 also features several versatile and acclaimed musicians, including Rishon Odel, a Grammy-nominated bassist, composer, and producer who has released a documentary on jazz history featuring members of Charles Mingus' tour band. Donna Rose, a vocalist who has been active from the 1960s to the present day, currently fronts her own band, The Donna Rose Band, and has been a part of other notable groups such as Voyage, Brothers Plus, Rose Fever, and Pinnacle. Tom Russo, one of the most sought-after drummers in Buffalo during the 1970s and 1980s, has played for popular local groups like Penny Farthing, the Farrell Brothers, Big Wheelie, and The Buffalo Blues Brothers Band.
Honoring Acclaimed Percussionists, Songwriters, and Blues Legends
The 2024 inductees also include Christopher Swist, an internationally renowned master percussionist, composer, and educator whose music has been performed by prestigious orchestras and ensembles. Jim Yeomans, a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and recording artist from Nashville, has gained recognition for his work, including the songs "Dance with Me in Three-Quarter Time" and "There Goes My Heart." Finally, Joe Zappo, a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and bandleader known as "Dr. Z," is a Buffalo Blues Brother legend and an active member of the Western New York Buffalo Blues Society, with his band, Dr. Z and the Blues Remedy, still going strong since the 1980s.The induction ceremony for the 2024 class of the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame will be held on October 9 at Samuel's Grand Manor, followed by a concert at The Cove Seafood & Banquets the next night. Carolyn Moser, an Executive Board Member of the BMHOF, will serve as the Chairperson for the induction ceremony, ensuring a fitting celebration of these exceptional musicians and their contributions to the rich musical heritage of Buffalo.
