Feeding the Hungry: RSVP's Emergency Food Kit Program Brings Relief to Lee County

In a heartwarming display of community collaboration, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of the United Way of the Great River Region has partnered with youth from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to assemble and distribute 150 emergency food kits throughout Lee County. This initiative aims to provide vital sustenance to those in need, including food pantry visitors, the homeless, and individuals transitioning from incarceration.

The emergency food kit program was made possible through the combined efforts of RSVP and the Latter-day Saint youth. A total of 90 young volunteers participated in a Latter-day Saint Youth Conference, where they worked together to fill the two grocery bags that make up each kit. This assembly line approach allowed the team to efficiently prepare the kits, ensuring that they were ready for distribution.The food for the kits was secured through grants from Alliant Energy and the North Lee County Grant program, totaling ,000 and ,500, respectively. These funds enabled RSVP to purchase the necessary supplies and ensure that the kits were well-stocked with essential non-perishable items.

The Fort Madison Food Pantry, Community Action Program, Salvation Army, and Talbot House all played a crucial role in distributing the emergency food kits to those in need throughout Lee County.The emergency food kits are designed to provide a safety net for individuals and families who have exceeded their allotted visits to local food pantries or are facing unexpected food insecurity. This includes low-income individuals, veterans, seniors, and those with disabilities.
