Revolutionizing Fashion: How Style for Good is Empowering Pittsburghers to Embrace Sustainable, Ethical Style

Style for Good, founded by Taylor Couch and Sarah Daxton, is on a mission to promote sustainable, ethical fashion that supports mental well-being and empowers individuals to find their unique style.

Empowering Pittsburghers to Embrace Mindful Fashion

Style for Good's inclusive services cater to individuals of all backgrounds, gender identities, and budgets, with a special focus on those often excluded from mainstream fashion. Through their unique "pay what feels good" pricing model, clients can access a range of services, including style consultations, closet edits, thrift shopping trips, organizing, and "shop your closet" sessions to revamp existing wardrobes.

Redefining the Role of Fashion in Mental Health

The emphasis on mental health is deeply personal for both Couch and Daxton. Couch grew up with the belief that "if you feel bad, look good," highlighting the power of dressing to uplift one's mood. Similarly, Daxton, who deals with depression, understands the impact that even small, sustainable fashion choices can have on an individual's well-being."We don't anticipate that the right sweater will cure your depression," Couch explains, "but we know that style is a tool in what should be a very diverse toolbox of support for whatever your needs are."By challenging the notion that fashion is a luxury, Couch and Daxton believe more people can become empowered to find their unique styles and feel good in their bodies and what they choose to wear.

Fostering Self-Expression and Gender Affirmation

Recognizing that many people feel pressured to fit into clothes rather than find clothes that fit them, Couch and Daxton emphasize that fashion is not one size fits all. It can be a utility, an art, and a form of self-expression.One of the organization's proudest moments was when they had the opportunity to help a mother style her daughter who was transitioning. "It's so exciting to help someone build their first transition wardrobe — it's one of the greatest honors," Couch shares.

Addressing the Challenges of Fast Fashion

Couch and Daxton's journey to founding Style for Good began during the pandemic, when they both found themselves working in the fast fashion industry. Witnessing firsthand the struggles of their customers and the environmental impact of the industry, they were inspired to take action."After the pandemic, we both needed to find new jobs and landed in fast fashion," says Couch. "We were really seeing firsthand the struggles of both our customers and us as people working in it — seeing the impact environmentally so much more clearly by the sheer volume of clothes we were interacting with."This shared frustration prompted them to create a solution that would address the issues they had observed, leading to the birth of Style for Good.

Empowering Clients to Embrace Mindful Fashion

For those hesitant to take the first step toward a more mindful approach to fashion, Daxton offers simple advice: "Think about how you want to feel. It's not so much about the clothes, but it's about the feeling in your body and your mind. What do you want to emit to the world, and to yourself?"The organization's message resonated with one client, who had struggled to define her personal style for years. After a free consultation with Couch, the client booked a closet edit, a signature Style for Good service where Couch helped her rethink the process of letting go."It wasn't about achieving a perfectly coordinated closet, but about lifting the weight of excess to make space for what would empower me to be my most authentic and comfortable self," the client shares.Through their holistic approach, Style for Good is not just about clothes; it's about helping individuals look good, feel good, and ultimately, be good.
