Resilience in Beauty: Meet the Founder of Michigan’s First Beauty Mall

Overcoming the Odds: Detroit's Trailblazing Beauty Entrepreneur

Katrina Belin, a 39-year-old Detroit resident, has defied the odds stacked against foster care children. Despite the statistic that only 3% of foster care children graduate from a postsecondary institution, Belin not only earned a college degree but also became the CEO of Michigan's first beauty mall. Her remarkable journey is a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and the transformative impact of a supportive mentor.

Unlocking the Path to Success Through Mentorship

### The Guiding Light of a Foster MotherBelin's life took a pivotal turn when she entered the foster care system at the age of 14. It was there that she met her foster mother, Ruthie Davis, who would become a driving force in her life. Davis recognized Belin's potential and introduced her to the world of fashion, a realm Belin had never explored before."I didn't know there was a fashion industry that existed … until I got into the foster care system with her," Belin recalls. "She was really that person that bridged that gap and introduced me to the actual industry."Davis' unwavering support and financial assistance enabled Belin to pursue her passion for fashion, enrolling her in a modeling school at the age of 15. This experience laid the foundation for Belin's future success, as she began to explore the intricacies of the fashion industry.### Overcoming Adversity: From Foster Care to EntrepreneurshipPrior to her foster care placement, Belin's life had been marked by instability. After the tragic loss of her birth mother at the age of 3, she was "shipped around" to live with various family members and friends, eventually ending up in different group homes. The foster care system provided a much-needed sense of stability and direction, setting the stage for Belin's remarkable journey.### Harnessing Passion and PerseveranceBelin's entrepreneurial spirit blossomed during her time in the foster care system. After graduating from Oakland Community College with a nursing degree in 2010, she held several jobs within the healthcare system. However, her true passion lay in the fashion industry, and she began to explore her creative talents, designing a successful line of jeans. The popularity of her jeans line led to customers inquiring about why she didn't have her own store. In 2011, Belin seized the opportunity and opened Pink Diamond Couture, a boutique that operated until 2015.### The Birth of the Pink Diamond Beauty MallBelin's entrepreneurial journey took an unexpected turn in 2017 when she stumbled upon a dilapidated, fire-damaged building on Livernois Avenue, the renowned "Avenue of Fashion" in Detroit. Inspired by a divine revelation of a "beauty mall," Belin set out to transform the neglected structure into a vibrant hub for all things beauty and wellness.Navigating the challenges of securing the property and funding the renovations, Belin persevered, using her own resources and eventually securing a grant from the Motor City Match program. In 2018, she opened the Pink Diamond Beauty Mall, offering a diverse range of services, from nail care and hair styling to skin treatments and massage therapy.### Empowering the Community Through Holistic WellnessBelin's vision for the Pink Diamond Beauty Mall extends beyond just providing beauty services. She aims to create a space where women can feel empowered, nurtured, and supported, especially those who have faced adversity like she did in the foster care system."Being a foster child and just being in the system, … they don't tend to care too much about your hygiene, your hair — you know, things of that nature," Belin explains. "I wanted to have something right here in the community where … if you're going through different life stressors or trauma or anything, you'd be able to have a place to come and receive great treatment and just kind of get back to you."The Pink Diamond Beauty Mall has become a beacon of hope and empowerment, offering a holistic approach to wellness and self-care in a community that has historically faced challenges.
