‘Floral in Fashion’: Texas Fashion Collection and Dallas Arboretum blossom through summertime collaboration

Blooming Brilliance: Floral Fashion Flourishes at the Dallas Arboretum

The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden has transformed into a vibrant canvas of floral fashion, as visitors immerse themselves in the captivating exhibition "Floral in Fashion." Showcasing the intricate interplay between nature and couture, this collaborative effort between the Arboretum and the Texas Fashion Collection (TFC) promises to delight and inspire.

Cultivating Connections: Where Nature and Style Intertwine

Endless Summer, Endless Inspiration

The Arboretum's "Endless Summer" theme sets the stage for this enchanting exhibition, drawing inspiration from the iconic film of the same name. Dustin Miller, Vice President of Programs and Learning at the Arboretum, explains the seamless connection between the movie's tropical aesthetics and the Arboretum's lush, horticultural offerings. "We were like 'OK, we can make this horticultural connection to this movie that's celebrating a milestone birthday,' and then the fashion relates to tie into all of that, too."

Blooming Narratives: Exploring Floral Fashion

Annette Becker, director of the TFC and university alum, saw the potential to create a more educational and explorative display, moving beyond the initial idea of an Aloha shirt exhibition. "They had this idea, and then through a conversation we developed a project that I think is a little bit deeper and more meaningful," Becker shares. The resulting "Floral in Fashion" exhibition showcases a diverse array of garments, each with its own captivating story to tell.

Cultivating Connections: Partnerships and Audiences

The collaboration between the Arboretum and the TFC has opened up new avenues for both institutions to engage with their audiences. Becker notes that the partnership allows the TFC to reach a broader audience, as the organization currently lacks a designated exhibition space. "This is really a way to create a broader audience for the Texas Fashion Collection's holdings," she explains. Miller echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the value of connecting with community partners to expand the Arboretum's reach.

Botanical Couture: Bringing the Garden to the Garment

The exhibition's featured botanicals were carefully selected with the North Texas climate in mind, ensuring that visitors can be inspired to incorporate these plants into their own gardens. Megan Proska, Associate Vice President of Horticulture and Collections at the Arboretum, explains the thought process behind the plant selections: "I know that some of these plants may hold significance in other cultures, but from a horticulture standpoint I was like 'I can make this grow here.'" This focus on achievability not only educates visitors but also sparks their imagination.

Celebrating Cultural Narratives: Hanae Mori and the Global Reach of Fashion

The exhibition features a dress by renowned Japanese designer Hanae Mori, who holds a significant place in the history of fashion. Becker highlights Mori's pioneering role as the first Japanese designer to establish a presence outside of her home country, with Neiman Marcus in Dallas being one of the first places to showcase her work. "She was the first designer from Japan to essentially be a fashion designer outside of Japan […], and she was the first Asian designer to be part of the world of haute couture […]," Becker explains, underscoring the cultural significance of this garment.

Cultivating Connections: Botanical Couture and Culinary Delights

In conjunction with the "Floral in Fashion" exhibition, the Arboretum hosted a special event, "Botanical Couture: From Garden to Garment," featuring a collaboration with Dallas-based Lucca & Livvy and the restaurant chain Asian Mint. This event further reinforced the synergies between the natural world, fashion, and culinary experiences, creating a multisensory celebration of the exhibition's themes. The "Floral in Fashion" exhibition at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden is a captivating exploration of the intersection between nature and style. Through this collaborative effort, visitors are invited to delve into the rich narratives woven into each garment, fostering a deeper appreciation for the intricate connections between the natural and the sartorial realms.
