The Jefferson City American Legion Post 5 Sophomores encountered a tough test in their pool-play games at the Up & Coming Ozark Open tournament. In the opening matchup, they fell 4-0 to Sedalia Post 642, managing just three hits in the game. Caleb Howard, Luke Skinner, and Brayden Kempker each recorded a single, but the Sedalia pitching staff proved too dominant.The second game saw the Sophomores take on the Kickapoo 16U team, where they ultimately fell 9-5. Kickapoo jumped out to an early 9-0 lead, but the resilient Sophomores refused to give up. In the top of the third inning, Carson Verslues drove in a run with a single, sparking a comeback effort. Caleb Howard and Luke Skinner added RBI singles in the fifth inning, cutting the deficit to four runs. Verslues, Howard, and Kyson Green each finished the game with two hits, showcasing the team's offensive potential.Despite the losses, the Sophomores demonstrated their ability to battle back and never surrender. In the opener against Sedalia, Mitchell Rogers threw 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Kason Lance came in to finish the game, walking one and striking out two.In the second game, Brayden Kempker provided five innings of relief, limiting the damage against the powerful Kickapoo lineup. Kempker allowed five runs, two of which were earned, on nine hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
