The vehicle, driven by 32-year-old Margot Lewis from North Liberty, Iowa, had entered the median at a high rate of speed and crashed into a guardrail protecting the Hwy. 42 overpass support pillar.When the deputies arrived at the scene, they found Lewis sitting in a folding chair in the grass median, provided by a bystander. Witnesses informed the responding deputy that an injured or deceased person was in the crashed vehicle. Approaching the car, the deputy made a chilling discovery – the body of 35-year-old Liara Tsai of Minneapolis, wrapped in a bed sheet, a blanket, a futon-style mattress, and a tarp. Tsai's body was positioned with her head towards the passenger side and her feet facing the driver's side, with the back seats folded down.

The court filing indicates that Tsai had a large wound around her carotid artery on the right side of her neck and was cold to the touch. The complaint also notes that the bed sheet appeared to be soaked with dried blood.
