Tragedy in South Fulton: A Deadly Dispute Over a Car

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a father and his daughter were tragically killed in a shooting at the Freedom Park Apartments in South Fulton, Georgia. The incident, which reportedly stemmed from an argument over a vehicle, has left the community reeling and searching for answers.

A Senseless Act of Violence Shatters a Family

The Tragic Incident

The South Fulton Police Department responded to a shooting call at the Freedom Park Apartments on Delano Road on a Sunday morning. According to South Fulton Police Chief Keith Meadows, the incident occurred when two men were engaged in a dispute over a vehicle. One of the men, who had purchased the car for his daughter, had not yet paid the seller. This escalated into a confrontation, during which the seller allegedly opened fire, fatally wounding the father and his daughter. The victims have been identified as Stanley and Heather Neely, a beloved father-daughter duo. The family members expressed their grief and outrage, vowing that the perpetrator would face the consequences of their actions. "It's our baby brother. A lot of fun, and he loved people," said Nancy Neely Gibson, the sister of the slain father. "Whoever did it will pay for it will pay for it dearly."

A History of Violence at the Complex

The Freedom Park Apartments on Delano Road have been the site of multiple incidents of violence in the past. Just a month prior, another resident, 30-year-old Dave Prater, was found dead at the complex after a reported altercation. The Neely family also shared that another family member had been shot at the same location a couple of years ago, further highlighting the ongoing safety concerns in the area.Shaunya Johnson, a relative of the Neely family, expressed the family's desire for the apartment complex to be shut down due to the lack of security and the failure to provide a safe environment for residents and their children. "We want these apartments to be shut down for lack of providing security and a safe environment for other people and their children," she stated.

The City's Response and Commitment to Community Safety

Councilwoman Helen Willis, who represents the district where the Freedom Park Apartments are located, acknowledged that crime in the area has decreased significantly in recent years. However, in response to this latest tragedy, the City of South Fulton Police Department has pledged to take proactive measures to enhance community safety. In a statement, the city expressed its commitment to strategically installing monitored surveillance systems within the area, increasing patrols, and enhancing visibility. The goal is to ensure that every member of the community feels safe and secure in their homes and neighborhoods, while fostering a secure environment and providing the necessary support.

A Call for Unity and Accountability

The Neely family's grief was palpable, as they grappled with the senseless loss of their loved ones. Nancy Neely Gibson emphasized the need for the community to come together and address the underlying issues that contribute to such acts of violence. "Between ourselves, we need to know how to come together," she said. "What people want to do is bring chaos to the world. That's not right."The tragic incident in South Fulton has once again highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to address the root causes of violence and ensure the safety and well-being of all community members. As the investigation continues and the city takes steps to enhance security, the Neely family's call for unity and accountability serves as a poignant reminder of the work that lies ahead in creating a safer and more just society.
